I am about to head out to downtown to visit one of my gracious friend’s house for a new year’s eve gathering. She says a silly thing like “no single man at this party, but you are more than welcome to join us – and you are totally free to go if you find other parties with single man/en.” Haha. She’s funny in that way (I think that’s why we love her dearly…) Then, tomorrow, another gracious friends are throwing a new year party at their home. She says it will be a small gathering, but it turned out to be not that small in my scale. It will be fun.

I am grateful to have friends – not just them from the parties, but all of my friends who can share the joys and happiness, sometimes sadness, sorrows – all of the above. If anything I have accomplished in the year of 2011, I couldn’t have done it without the support from “you.” Dear friends, I love you all and wish us the best of the best in 2012!

Time flies. My last few days were a combination of being relaxed and busy. The most notable thing is probably that I just have finished the mix down of my recording. It went really well and can’t thank enough Katsu and Toru. If this is on FB, I must click LIKE thousands.

On Tuesday, the 17th, I will be performing in the place called, Bar Thalia at Symphony Space (Upper West.) This is the first time to be there, and I am very much looking forward to the gig. Toru will be on keyboard and Noriko will be on bass. Yeah! This is definitely going to be a fun night. Mark your calendar. It’s no cover nor minimum.

The reason why I am “sneakingly” and “retrospectively” posting this is quite simple.
I wasn’t sure if this is good enough to do or meaningful enough to post publicly.
To be quite honest, I still am not sure!?
HOWEVER!
although I was extremely nervous on that day and have underperformed technically
compared to my jazz performances in general
(juuuuuuust being self-critical as the way all good musicians are!),
I can say that I am still proud of what I have done
and want to appreciate wonderful musicians I have worked with

To those who couldn’t make it on March 3 due to the schedule conflict
or travel distance, I have decided to put “A HAPPY NEW YEAR” from that night up on my blog.
This song ended up to be one of new addition to my repertoire
that now I regularly sing at my jazz gigs – Toru and I do this song literally throwing
in between jazz standards. I love it. (= love singing with Toru’s piano.)

As a good memory of Satoshi being in New York,
I also put “Ano Hi Ni Kaeri Tai,” and this is a duo with Satoshi on guitar.
We both made mistakes (hahaha), but I still like it.

I am telling you… I was surprised by the quality of pictures.
It was videoed from the 2nd floor, mezzanine level of the theater.
It’s not that close to the stage, but it captured well – I think.
Thank you for both Takashi and Steve Job’s gangs at Apple (LoL).

A HAPPY NEW YEAR

あの日に帰りたい

散々悩んだ末、２曲だけアップロードしました。
遠くに住んでる方や、どうしても事情があって来られなかった、
そんな方々の為に、お恥ずかしながらコソコソと（笑）。

緊張しまくりの平麻美子をお楽しみ下さい？？？
どどさん、のんちゃん、さとしさん、
みなさん素敵なのが救いです（爆）。

A Happy New Yearは、あの日を境に、
しっかりワタシのレパートリーの中に入り、
どどりんとラウンジのデュオの時に演奏します。

ジャズのスタンダードの、ど真ん中に放り込んでも
不思議にすんなり混ざれるのは、
ユーミンの淡々と繰り返される、短く、でもしっかりとドラマのある
メロディーの成せる技でしょうか？
歌詞が英語でなくても、これまたすんなりとアメリカ人の
お客様にも受入れて頂けてしまう、貴重なレパートリーになりました。

そう、ほんの軽い思いつきでも、
実際に形にするには、時間がかかっているわけでして、
正に、手塩にかけた子供を世に出すような、そんな妙な心境なわけです。
それも、90分で終わる（予定の）、狂い咲くだけ咲いて、
あっという間に散る、そんな花のような歩みで。
もう、正に、学園祭のノリ、そのものですよ（爆）。
気分は屋台の一日店長さん！
（ジャズ研の君なら、ジャズクラブの一日マスター！）

と、冗談はさておき。

今回、快く参加を名乗り出てくれた
なぶこさん、えりかちゃん、あけみちゃん、
バックを引き受けてくれた智さん、どどさん、のりこさん、
もう、誰が一人欠けても駄目っていうか、
この人たちだから、うまい具合に物事が回ってるんだよな、
って感動を覚えます。どうもありがとう。
（当日言うのを忘れたりすることもあるから、
先に言っておかないとね！笑）

準備の期間と、自分のデモの録音とが重なって、
ちょっと時間とペースの配分に苦労したっちゃ、したんですが、
結局、なんとでもなっちゃうんですよね、忙しいなら忙しいなりに。
ひょっとしたら忙しいほうが、無駄なく回転することもあるのかもしれない。
イケイケっていう、そういうFast Paceっていうんでしょうか。

でも、本当に色々な方々が楽しみにして下さっていて、
日本からも応援してくれていて、
なんか、やってよかったな、
明日、みんなが笑顔でお家に帰ってくれたら、
それが何よりだな、って思います。

話は変わりますが（いつもの飛びっぷり。）

選曲をする段階で、最初選んでいた曲に
チャイニーズ・スープがあって、なんとなく知っていた曲だったものの、
コード進行もイマイチうろ覚えだし、CD、この際だ、買うか！
って思って、コバルト・アワーを買ったんですね、今回。
で、聞いていたら、花紀行という歌が入っていて、
生まれて初めて聞いたんです、その曲を。
もう、ブリッジに入る前の段階で、あ、これを歌ったほうがいい、
断然、これは自分が歌うべき、って直感思って、
仲間にメールを
「チャイニーズ・スープやめて、花紀行にします」宣言をしたんです。
チャイニーズ・スープも、歌ったら歌ったで
いい感じになったと思うのですが、花紀行ほどのインパクトというか、
自分との結びつきを感じられなかった。
面白いですね、曲との出会いというのは。

オリジナルのフィールでは演奏しませんが、
あの3人（はい、あの3人です）と自分が演奏するには
やっぱ、こう来ないとね！って、皆さんにも感じていただけるような
仕上がりになっていると、既に確信しちゃってますので（笑）、
皆様、お楽しみに…

Now, let’s talk’bout “YUMING THINGS,” a special event on Wednesday, March 3 at the Triad Theater. The last time I had this sort of collaborative event was 7 years ago, and it was also Spring event (’hinamatsuri’) with 2 other singers. In that event, we sang from jazz repertoires. さて本題。

いよいよ、三日後に迫りました”YUMING THINGS”ですが、
今日、バンドリハーサルをやってきました。
かなり面白いことになりそうです。
まず、選曲からして４人それぞれの持ち味がよく出ているというか、
個性がここまでクッキリ出ているというのは
まず面白いですし、この選んだ曲が、バランス良く、ここまで
並んだというのも、また面白いというか、なんというか。
それぞれが４曲選んでいるのですが、
どれも正に、なぶこ〜、えりか〜、あけみ〜、まみこ〜、
っていう印がしっかり付いているというか（笑）。
ユーミンの曲を知らない人でも、楽しめますし、
知っている人は、また違った角度で楽しめると思います。

Don’t you hate when your mac is acting unstable? I guess my pirika (that’s my HD name on my mac book) is in over all OK, but CD/DVD drive is acting… a little moody (sigh). It worries me for WHAT IF situation, so I decided to create a backup of iTunes and some pictures. Creating iTune backup went fine. However, iPhoto backup was a bit problematic, and I was only able to create 1st disc… I may need to backup online in somewhere. Maybe, right?

ANYHOW….

On March 3, as I wrote in early blog entry (and an email blast I made in the beginning of February through my ML), 3 of my dear singer friends and I will have a special event at the Triad Theater in Upper West (72nd and Broadway vicinity). Here is a dedicated web site that has just created, and please check it out the detail of the event including the map, participating musicians’ bio, flyer, etc.. We will add more information in this week (hopefully if I can finish all charts writing on time!) Please stay tuned even after the event. Probably pictures will be uploaded :)

The funny thing I was made realized through this “Yuming Project” was that I can feel an unsaid expectation from the people that I should be fine with singing Japanese lyrics and memorizing them because I am Japanese – obviously. I thought, too, at the beginning. However, it isn’t. Trust me.

It made me so confused and is giving me a hard time particularly how to make things groove with Japanese. I used to sing Japanese songs up to maybe… 18 or 19 years old and didn’t have much of an opinion in rhythm and lyric directly associated to the language itself (in other words, I was careless about it because singing in Japanese was natural thing to me.) Ever since I stopped singing Japanese songs excluding Karaoke in rare occasions and soaked myself in English songs and its language, I most likely lost the handling of Japanese words on music because of that. (I mean I can sing still, but you know… I’m not an expert anymore – that’s what I meant – compared to those who sings only Japanese songs.)

It is challenging, but fun to rediscover my first language and make it musical stylized with my own way in current. I believe I won’t be able to bring back the way I used sing in my teens, but instead, I now have a new perspective, the new way of digesting Japanese language. And I think it’s absolutely fine and almost like accepting myself as is (sounds like being on therapy of some sort!).

Blah, blah, blah…

Anyhow, I am very excited to do this event with Nabuko, Erika, and Akemi as well as Toru, Satoshi, and Noriko. We are receiving pretty good reaction from people including musicians who wanted to be a part of (but they couldn’t in various reasons). We can see many people are really excited as we are! I think it is so nice to have an event like this because it enriches our souls and musicianship.

BTW, about the show… There is no advance ticket to this show sold at the box office. It is “first come, first served” basis and the charge is collected anytime after 9:30PM of the day of event, March 3. Therefore, don’t bother calling the Triad’s box office!

On Wednesday, March 3 to celebrate Japanese Girl’s Day, there is a special event takes place at the Triad theater in Upper West side. Four Japanese jazz singers, Akemi Yamada, Erika Matsuo, Nabuko Kiryu, and Mamiko Taira will share the stage presenting a songbook of Yumi Matsutoya (Arai). Her works are all written in Japanese, and they will
perform in Japanese with authenticity in the acoustic jazz format. The band members are Satoshi Inoue (g), Toru Dodo (p), and Noriko Ueda (b). The door will open at 9:30 PM, and the 90 minute- long show will start at 10PM. $10 cover with 2 drinks minimum. ひとつは、今週の土曜日にある

Jazz: The Japanese Connection

なるイベント。
ニューヨークのジャズ界、そして日本人ジャズ・ミュージシャンのネットワークの中で、
Cobi Naritaさんのお名前を皆さん一度は耳にされたことがあると思います。
今回のRomeさん主催のイベントは、Cobi Naritaさんにトリビュートするもので、
なんだかとってもゴージャズな面々が出演者に名前を連ねているのです。

そんな中、特別ゲスト（Special Guestって、日本語にすると凄い響き）で
どどさんが出ることになっており、ソロのピースを２曲ほどご披露されるそう。
ワタシは、そのどどりん枠（♪）で、彼がソロ・ピースを演奏された後、
デュオで歌うことになっています。有難いお話です、歌い手冥利に尽きます。
（どの辺りが、どのように歌い手冥利に尽きると言わせるのか、
それは別の機会にお話できればいいですねー、と逃げる・笑）

次の面白いイベントは、翌月、３月３日のおひな祭りのイベントです。
ひな祭り、はい、あのひな祭りです。
日本人ですから！女の子ですから！！

か～なり昔、下手すると７、８年まえになりますか？に、
おひな祭りのイベントを３人のボーカルとギタートリオで打ったことがありまして、
もちろんその時のギターは智さんだったわけですが、
そのなつかしのイベントの復活版、というか、パワーアップバージョン、
ついでに、ちょっとチャレンジもしてしまいましょう、と
イベントを去年の秋から密かに企画、準備していたのです。
そしてやっとこさ、皆さんに少しお話ができるところまで持ってこれたので、
ちょこっと前フリ告知をしてみようと思います。

全部、ユーミンこと、松任谷由実（荒井由実）の曲で構成されます。
ひゃー、言った、言った！ Now it’s official!

日本語ですよ、ぜーんぶ日本語。
普段、ジャズ・スタンダードやブラジルものを歌う４人の日本人ジャズシンガーが、
日本語の、それもユーミンの曲を取り上げちゃうわけです。

カバー・チャージも破格値の$10、それでこのメンバー、必見でしょう？
時間も、残業、バイト、学校が終わってから間に合う、
大人の１０時（！）、９０分のステージを一気にがーん、ですから～
（もう、訳分からないですね？このうたい文句。すみません。）

３月３日（水）は、是非、Triadでひな祭り、
女の子はもちろん、男の子も桃の節句を祝いましょう：）

ちなみに、カラオケ以外のシチュエーションで
日本語の歌を人様の前で歌うのは、ワタシの場合、皆無に等しいです。
昔から日本語が日本語に聞こえねーと文句言われていたりしたので、
にほんご学校からやり直して、イベントに挑もうと、、、（嘘）
でも、本当、ジャズ歌いが普通にさらりとユーミン歌うと、
どうなるんでしょうね？

レコーディングが終わったら、本格的にマテリアルの準備に取り掛かろうと思います。（汗）
