メンバーは、百々徹さん、Steve Whippleさん、そしてワタシ。
ご機嫌です。
ワタシにとっての「幸」の一つとして
堂々とカウントしたい組み合わせでございます。
夜9時から11時半まで、2セットです。

そして、同じメンバーで、翌週、3月1日の木曜日には
Symphony Spaceの中にあるBar Thaliaで演奏です。
今月の頭に初めてブッキングして頂けて、演奏をしたBar Thalia。
3月に戻れてハッピーです！
こちらは、夜9時スタート、11時終わり、やはり2セットです。

最近、色々な場所で、色々な人が細かなトピックは異なっても、
共通して、音楽を熱く語る人が出てきた、というよりも
少しだけ戻ってきたような気がする。（昔はあったこと、だと思う。）

昔の熱さは未知なるものへの期待や、
何かを創ろう！っていう気持が生んだ熱だけれども、
今回の場合は、疑問や危機を通して生まれた熱だ。
どっちがいい、悪いというのは、ここでは関係なくて、
熱が生まれたことが好ましいんじゃないかな、と思う。

この今日日の熱。
音楽を創る側、演奏する側にとっての
現場が腐ってきているとか、温いとか、
そういう感覚を肌で感じてるから、口が自然に開いた。
それでも、未だ未だ黙っている人のほうが多いんだが、
それはそれで、まずは良いと思う。
だって、いつの世だって、最初に口を開く人や行動を起こす人は
少数派なわけだから。
Good things are the good things.
All that simple!

スケートの選手権。（い、いきなり！）
Technical Impression、Artistic Impressionに大別して
ポイントをつけて行きますよね。
ま、テクニックの採点は、大会で規定する技をいくつ成功させたか
（何回転で飛んだかとか）、加算、減点法を採用しているので
音楽に丸ごとはapplyできないと思うけれども、
考え方としては、この大別、音楽にも当てはまるものかと思う。

音楽の選手権？
いや、そうではなくて、一般的に人が音楽を聴いて、
善し悪しを判断する時の、趣向の現れであったり、
批評をする立場の職業の方々が演奏を聞いて判断する際などに。

何が言いたい？さっさと書け、本題を！
と言われそうなので、話を進めますが、、、
外国語の歌をうたう時（歌の言語が自分の母国語でない場合）、
発音、とても重要な位置を占めますよね。
英語で唄うってこと、ジャズを歌うことで突っ込んで言えば、
リズムとの密接な関わりから、音楽的要素として
カウントされる先生も日本でも最近は多いのではないでしょうか？
もちろん、ワタシもリズムとしての言葉の大切さは
日頃からヒシヒシと感じているのですが、
でも、でもです、、、
やっぱり、言葉の基本はコミュニケーション。
発音は、その言葉を伝える為に不可欠なもので、
アイススケートの審判に当てはめるなら、
Technical Impressionの方に入るものだと思うんです。
だから、歌の善し悪し（嫌いな表現だけれども、
上手いとか、下手とか、そゆもの）の尺度で見れば、
発音は、音楽性、Artistic Impressionの中に
含めて考えるものではないって、ワタシは常に自分の中で意識してます。

ハート、気持ちという部分は、テクニックを越えた、
別の次元にあると思うんです。そして、
発音っていうテクニックは、人のココロを動かすものでは決してないと思うんです。
むちゃくちゃ、当たり前のことを今、ワタシ、言ってますよね？笑

でも、あえて当たり前のことかもしれないけれども、
シンガーの皆さん、Technical Impressionも大事ですが、
やっぱり、Artistic Impressionに当たる、
ココロの部分、表現の部分、どこかに置き忘れてこないように。
だって、Artistic Impressionに当たる部分は、
母国語で歌っているシンガーだって、常に精進していないと駄目な部分なわけですから、
その勝負のかけどころ、忘れてしまっては！
どんなにキレイな発音で歌っても、
何も伝わらないことだってあるんですから。

あなたの歌を通して、あなたの伝えたいこと、
表現したいことが
オーディエンスに伝わってますか？

、、、って、いつも言いたかったっていうか、
聞きたかったんです。

I am about to head out to downtown to visit one of my gracious friend’s house for a new year’s eve gathering. She says a silly thing like “no single man at this party, but you are more than welcome to join us – and you are totally free to go if you find other parties with single man/en.” Haha. She’s funny in that way (I think that’s why we love her dearly…) Then, tomorrow, another gracious friends are throwing a new year party at their home. She says it will be a small gathering, but it turned out to be not that small in my scale. It will be fun.

I am grateful to have friends – not just them from the parties, but all of my friends who can share the joys and happiness, sometimes sadness, sorrows – all of the above. If anything I have accomplished in the year of 2011, I couldn’t have done it without the support from “you.” Dear friends, I love you all and wish us the best of the best in 2012!

Time flies. My last few days were a combination of being relaxed and busy. The most notable thing is probably that I just have finished the mix down of my recording. It went really well and can’t thank enough Katsu and Toru. If this is on FB, I must click LIKE thousands.

One step at a time. The next will be mastering:)

On Tuesday, the 17th, I will be performing in the place called, Bar Thalia at Symphony Space (Upper West.) This is the first time to be there, and I am very much looking forward to the gig. Toru will be on keyboard and Noriko will be on bass. Yeah! This is definitely going to be a fun night. Mark your calendar. It’s no cover nor minimum.

今年の初めは、確か記憶に正しければ（怪しい！）
新年会から始まり、色々なイベントの
プランを立てたりしながら
バタバタと過ぎ去っていった気がします。
そして、３月の震災。
そこから色々と自分の中の日本であったり、
自分の音楽に対する姿勢やら、
日本との関わり方が変化していきました。
七夕のYuming Things 2、
アルバムのレコーディング、
恒例の秋の日本でのライブ、
先日のNippon Song。
沢山の出会いがありました。
そして、これらは全て、
自分の中で、何か繋がるというか、
来年、２０１２年の土台になっていくような
そう思わせる何かがあります。

世の中には沢山のミュージシャンが
何かを表現するというアートの一端を担っていて、
自分はその中の、何万といるミュージシャンの一人なわけですが、
ワタシだから出来ること、
ワタシだから歌えること、
というのを
信頼できる仲間と一緒に創り続けていきたいと思います。

来年も宜しくお願い致します！

今回もそれなりの速さで駆け抜ける
短期滞在だったけれども、非常に良い滞在だった。
毎回、日本に行く度にそのように思える自分は実に恵まれていると思う。
これも偏に家族、友人、サポーターのみなさま、
共演して下さったミュージシャンのみなさま、
快くワタシを迎え入れてくれるお店のみなさま、
その他諸々のみなさまのお陰なのであります。
本当にありがとうございました。

今回は、歌っては休み（眠り）歌っては移動し（眠り）
といった飛び石間隔でブッキングをしたので、
一応、アメリカでとり損ねている睡眠の
全部とはいかないまでも、ちょっとは補うことに成功していたような気が、、、
（でも自信がないところが〜、どうよ〜、って。）

で、感想ですが、、、

自分が今までやってきたことを振り返れば、
基本的に大きくは変化していないように本人としては感じていまして。
それは例えば、音楽に対する姿勢もそうだし、
骨組みみたいなものに関してなんですが、
そういう部分を変えないことに
疑問全く感じなかったと言えば嘘になる（いや、まじめに！）。
やっぱり方向転換したほうがいいのかしら？であるとか（いや、本気で！笑）。
でも、今回、なんだか知らないけれど、これでいいんだ！みたいな
go signが瞬いたっていうか、、、
今年も日本に帰って良かったな、ってココロから思ったのです。
音楽、続けてきて本当に良かった：）

皆さん、来年お会いできるのを楽しみにしてますよ〜。





ニューヨークに戻って来て、もう街が感謝祭を飛び越して
クリスマスの空気が漂ってるのにはビックリした。
明日から感謝祭のホリデーだけれど、これが終わったら
一気に年末！って空気に包まれて
気がつくと年が明けておりました〜、なんてブログに書いているんだろうなー（汗）。

さて、戻って来て最初のギグは、Mar Creation主催の
Nippon Song Holiday Concertと銘打った
アーティスト・ショーケースです。
これは春頃からMar Creationの代表である河野さんが温めて来た企画で
全くジャンルの違うアーティスト４組を集めて
日本をテーマに演奏をするもの。
光栄なことに、我々、百々／平のデュオも参加させて頂ける上、
個人的に非常に楽しみにしていたGo-Zee-Lahとの共演も含まれており、
今からワクワクしてます。
こういう形でアーティスト同士が出会う機会っていうのは
なかなか無いので、みなさまにも是非、都合をつけて
お越しいただきたいな、ってココロから思うのです。

さて。

１１月４日（金）、祝日明けは、昨年に引き続き
六本木アルフィーで歌います。
古谷淳トリオ（安ヵ川大樹 、柴田亮）との共演。
予約状況ですが良い感じに入っているようです。
２セット目はWalk-in（予約無しでふらっと）というのも大丈夫そうな感じなんですが、
１セット目は、お手数ですが一本お店に連絡を入れて席を確保されたほうが
ひょっとしたら安全かも？？？と思います。

１１月６日（日）は、古谷淳さんのホームグラウンドの甲府のアルフィー。
２年ぶり、２度目の今回は、淳さん、ワタシ、そして
井上智さんと３人でお届けします。
甲府のアルフィーは、イタリアンのお店で、
日本人好みの上品で丁寧な味、とても美味しいのです（今からワクワク）。
どうですか？有給休暇を月曜日にとって、温泉旅行を兼ねて
甲府でジャズというのは。

１１月８日（火）は、学芸大学駅前の珈琲美学。
お約束の！（自主的にお約束化させてます・笑）
智さんとのデュオ。今回、デュオの日は、この火曜日の珈琲美学のみ。
見逃し、聞き逃し厳禁ですぞ！（自分で言いきるところがアレですけど・笑）
某情報筋によれば、封印されたと思われた智節（ギャグ方面）は健在とのことですしぃ。

１１月１０日は、遠足気分で名古屋に足を伸ばします。
昨年に引き続きスターアイズさんで長谷川朗トリオ
（渡辺ショータ、加藤雅史）と共演です。
今回は、テナー、ピアノ、ベース、そして歌という構成。
朗くんのテナー間近で聴けるのが楽しみ！
チャージもお手頃価格になってるので、名古屋方面の方、
遊びにいらして下さーい。

そして今回の滞在の〆は、１２日のお茶の水ナル。
古谷淳トリオ（中林薫平、柴田亮）と一緒にお届けします。
今回は、５本ある内の３本は淳君と一緒なので、
やはり、回数を重ねることからくる音の変化というのが
聴きどころ、楽しみのひとつです。
なるべく予約してのご来店をお勧めします。

と、宣伝はこの辺まで。

東京、暖かいですね。毎年、来る度にそう思いますが、
今年は特に。でも、ニューヨークが寒くなるのが早すぎただけなのかも
（ってか、雪には本当にやられたな、って思いました）。

なんか、如何にアメリカのものがサイズが大きいのか、
思い知らされるというか、物のサイズだけじゃなくて、
階段の段の高さから、ドアなんかのサイズもそうだし。
電車もバスも小さい。道路も狭い。
でも、改札は広い気がしました。
スーツケース持って、他にかばんを持って通っても
どこに引っ掛かることもなく、すうっと通れるのは凄いなー。

日本にお住まいの皆さん、きれいですよね、こぎれい。
男性も女性も、日本人だけじゃなくて、皆、全体的に汚い格好してる人がいない。
とりあえず、昨日の成田から家に帰るまでの間に遭遇した人を見る限りは
皆さん、きれい。通勤着じゃない人でも、なんかこう、アイロンがぴしっと入っていて
染みひとつないような、そういうキレイさ。
清潔感っていうか。なんていうか。隙のようなもの、ふっと力を抜いたような
そういう部分が全くない感じ。独特だなー、改めて思うけれども。

不思議、わくわくの国、日本、既に満喫中です！

The time flies.
I thought it was a month away – I guess not.
It’s… this coming Wednesday!
Toru and I will be back in Metropolitan Room for this time
in late show, 9:30PM start.
It perhaps shouldn’t be called as late set because it’s not that late start.
But hey, it may be clearer to say so to differentiate with the other…. early show.
Anyway, “late show” sounds classier than saying 9:30 show. no?

This will be the last gig before I go to Japan in November, and
for a while I don’t have a duo gig until December.

You may know or may not know, but anyhow,
I had recording sessions in the end of September.
In the past, I had at least 2 opportunities to make an album
and went into the studios (excl. demos or small projects).
However, I didn’t like what came out of them, and call both of them off
(stayed within pre-production and didn’t go in to the production
- yep, executive decision indeed.)
I won’t get into the reasons why I didn’t, but
the one thing I can say is that it was a right decision for both times.
It was a big detour perhaps. But… so what?
That’s just me, and it is absolutely acceptable in my book (lol).

Let me tell you… it was a fun session.
Toru was awesome to the max, Miki was sweet and fabulous as always,
Michael was supportive at the console, Shinya helped me greatly
(and considering the perfectness of him being there at that time
- nearly a miracle)… What can I be and do instead of having fun?

I am thinking of mastering them in December until I figure out
which tunes to be included, in what order to put
as well as thinking of cover design.
Hopefully I can get this baby out in next Spring.

So I had fun. That’s all good.
I have learned a lot in many ways.
That’s also good. Particularly and concisely…
the emphasis was on learning about myself – I think.

Now, what’s on my plate?

My August now is dedicated to preparation of my recording scheduled in the end of September. Which will be a sort of comprehensive collection of Mamiko-Toru Duo’s work built in these years. I am very excited about this and hoping I can release it in Spring of 2012.

Also, my quartet will be back in Tomi Jazz in the 3rd week of September. It’s the same group as you’ve experienced back in June (Toru, Steve, and Tomo). That’s another fun thing awaits in this Fall.

Speaking of Fall, I will be in Japan in November, and the schedule is almost filled. I am so much looking forward to see people in Japan. In this year, I will feature Jun Furuya on piano (as of now, 3 gigs are with him). FYI, I didn’t forget to book a duo gig with Satoshi (how can I skip that!?) Say… the Party’s ON!
