Update: April/May Schedule
On Saturday, April 24, I will be singing at Miles’ Café with Toru. Miles’ Café is a sister branch of Miles’ Café in Tokyo. They just opened in this year, and started serving live music from this Spring. Miles-san, the owner of Miles’ Café, is one of my old acquaintances who I met back in… 1994? Possibly? Or 1995 perhaps? We haven’t seen each other more than 10 years, and suddenly bumped into each other in front of Cleopatra’s Needle in last Winter. (funny, right?) Making a long story short, he invited me to sing at his new baby, Miles’s Café New York in this month and the next month.
The place is on the top floor of the building, and has a beautiful Steinway grand with nice set of PA as well as great lighting (good to take pix for sure!). Only remark is that this place is still in the process of receiving liquor license, therefore, it’s going to be BYOB (drinks) and BYOF (foods) also. So… basically you are invited to come to see us with very nominal music charge, like as if you are going to hear music in salon concert setting.
I am thinking of bringing a bottle of wine or two on my own (hey, it’s BYO!). Why don’t you join us and have a party with us? Bring your food and drink. Toru and I will entertain you from 8PM to 11PM. The cover is just $10. Not bad, ha?

縁とは異なものとはよく言ったもので。ワタシが大学を卒業して日本に帰国して間もない頃に知り合った音楽仲間（浅草ジャズのグランプリ仲間）を通して、ある人と知合いになりました。とても風変わりなというか、ユニークなトランペット吹きの方で、東京理科大のジャズ研の「あけみ」という簡易ジャズ喫茶（！）で初めて会って、その後も共通の友人のリハーサルバンドの練習スタジオに遊びに行ったりして、3回ぐらいお顔を拝見する機会がありました。その後は、ワタシはこちらに来てしまったので、コンタクトをとることもなく、風の噂で東京・池袋についにお店を出したそうだ、なんて話を耳にしたりしたのです。その時は、ああ、夢が叶ったんだなー、バイタリティのある人だな、なんて感心したのを覚えています。
そして時は流れて、名前すら思い出せないぐらいになり（失敬！）。それは去年の冬のことでした。なんか、あの人がついにニューヨークにお店出すそうだよ、なんて噂を耳にしました。この不景気の真っ只中に、彼もやるなー、なんて思っていた数日後の日曜日。どどさんのセッション目当てでCleopatra’s Needleに行った時、店の前にどこかで見覚えのある顔をした方が立っているじゃないですか。「あ！ひょっとして、ひょっとすると、マイルスさんですか？」と、寒空の下、ユニークなこのお方、マイルスさんに再会となったのです。また暫く音沙汰がなく、お店、見つかったのかなー、どうしてるかなー、なんて思っていたら、ぽろっとメールが届いて、お店が見つかって春には正式にお店を開ける、ライセンスも申請中という知らせを頂きました。本当、バイタリティのある方です。
…と、あとはご想像にお任せいたしますが、これも何かのご縁ということで、今月と来月、Miles’ Caféで演奏することになったのです。
Miles’s Caféは未だ飲み物、食べ物を出すライセンスがフルで取れていないので、今回はBYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle＝自分の飲み物は自分で持ち込みましょう！)とBYOF (Bring Your Own Food＝自分の食べるものは自分で持ち込みましょう！)です。土曜の夜のサロンコンサート。こういう過ごし方も、悪くないですよね。
